He was also the Minority Leader of the Senate from June 2011 to June 2015. He served as the governor of Benue State from May 1999 to May 2007.
Osifo, in his congratulatory message, said Akume’s appointment was an indication of the recognition of the immense contributions he had made to national development.
“I heartily congratulate you, Sen. George Akume on your appointment by the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
“Your appointment is an indication of the recognition of the immense contributions you have made to national development as Governor, Senator and Minister.
“The experience you have garnered in service will definitely be a great asset to the President and Nigerians in your new position.
“You are not noisy,” he said.
Osifo said Akume was a calm worker, believing that he would perform better than he had in his past areas of service to the nation and humanity.
The former presidential aspirant, therefore, wished him an outstanding and successful performance in his new office.
