Abuja Rail Mass Transit: Tinubu launches commercial operations, extends free-ride

President Bola Tinubu officially launched the commercial operations of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit on Wednesday, signaling a new era of modern transportation for the capital.

In a significant gesture to ease the commuting burden on residents, the President extended the initial two months of free rides to a total of six months, offering commuters a substantial period of fare-free travel.
Tinubu declared that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit, also known as Metro Line, will offer free rides till the end of the year.

Accompanied by other dignitaries on the inaugural ride to the airport, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians.

He praised FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike for the swift rehabilitation of vandalized rail tracks and the timely provision of access roads to all seven railway stations, bringing them to life with modern infrastructure.

“This is a renewed hope agenda,” President Tinubu declared, highlighting the collaborative efforts that made the project a reality.

FCT Minister, Barr Nyesom Wike acknowledged the transportation challenges faced by Abuja residents and reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the situation.

“We are aware of the difficulties residents face in commuting and are dedicated to providing a modern transportation system to ease their burden,” Wike stated.

He noted that the absence of access roads had previously hindered the metro line’s commercial operations, a gap now effectively bridged.

Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State for the FCT, expressed her gratitude to the President, Vice President, and Senate President, emphasizing the project’s significance.
“Today marks not only the inauguration of a modern transportation system but also a testament to the power of collaboration and determination,” she said.

“The Abuja light rail is a symbol of progress, connectivity, and accessibility for all.” Dr. Mahmoud highlighted the collective effort behind the project, celebrating its positive impact on the community.

Rt. Hon. Chinedum Elechi, Mandate Secretary for Transportation in the FCTA, detailed the project’s journey and the milestones achieved under Minister Wike’s leadership.”In line with His Excellency, Mr. President’s directive, the Minister of the FCT commenced the rehabilitation of the ARMT system,” Elechi noted.

The system, ready for operations with 12 Diesel Multiple Units, is designed to handle up to 39,200 passengers daily across its two routes, significantly enhancing the city’s transportation capacity.
