A Professor of Physiotherapy from the University of Ibadan (UI), Ade Adeniyi, has described physical activity as a viable option for healthy living.
Adeniyi stated this while delivering his inaugural lecture, titled “Lynching the Linchpin: Healthy Living in Disarray”, on Thursday at UI, Ibadan.
The don said it was challenging that the early man, who had limited or no knowledge of medicine, was able to live long and ward off some undesirable health consequences.
“It is, therefore, the prerogative of all and sundry to make an informed choice about adopting a healthy lifestyle, of which physical activity is a viable option,” Adeniyi said.
He said physical activity was more important to patients with chronic diseases to make them live a healthy and productive lifestyle.
He encouraged them to keep their appointments with healthcare providers instead of considering their condition as a death sentence.
The don charged the healthy population to desist from self-rating physical activities and ensure they source accurate assessments and customised prescriptions for physical exercises from experts.
Adeniyi called on healthcare providers to set up referrals for routine assessment of physical activity among all outpatients in hospitals.
He emphasised the need for synergy among all healthcare providers on education, counselling and interventions.
The don urged the university community to adopt a physically active lifestyle to reduce the burden of daily routines.
Adeniyi also called on policymakers to put systems in place to support physical activity and safety structures to promote commuting.
