Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, the 2023 Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) has applauded emergence of Mrs Mojisola Meranda as the first Female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Oyefusi, a renowned advocate for women’s empowerment, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the new speaker, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, describing it as “a beacon of hope and groundbreaking”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Meranda (APC- Apapa I) is the first woman to hold this esteemed position in the history of the House.

He said: “The Meranda’s emergence is a groundbreaking achievement, not only for Lagos State but for the entire nation.

“This historic emergence as Speaker is a monumental milestone. Your success will inspire countless young girls and women who aspire to lead and contribute meaningfully to our society.”

She highlighted the significance of this milestone in advancing gender equity and fostering greater inclusivity in leadership and governance.

Calling on the new speaker to exceed the accomplishments of her male predecessors, Oyefusi urged her to lead with vision.

She urged Meranda to ensure impactful legislation that would address the needs of Lagos residents, particularly in the areas of equity, innovation, and sustainable development.

Oyefusi reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the speaker, while also expressing confidence in Meranda’s ability to deliver exceptional leadership.

She said that Meranda’s election would serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement for women across Nigeria.

NAN reports that the emergence of Meranda, as the first female speaker in Lagos Assembly, has been widely celebrated as a significant step toward bridging the gender gap in politics.

32 out of the 40 lawmakers, at an emergency plenary, impeached Obasa via voice votes over alleged gross misconduct.

NAN reports that the Assembly subsequently elected and swore in Deputy Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa I) to replace Obasa while Mr Fatai Adebola (APC- Ibeji-Lekki I) was elected as the Deputy Speaker.

The House also suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Mr Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely during the plenary and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
