Gov. Makinde assures Corps members of adequate welfare, safety

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Tuesday, said that his administration would not relent in its efforts at addressing corps members welfare needs and safety in the state.

Makinde stated this during the closing of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course for corps members deployed to the state, at Iseyin town.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, urged the corps members to pay special attention to the development of their host communities by identifying viable projects that would positively impact on the lives of the people.

The governor also enjoined the corps members to be diligent, dedicated and law abiding in the discharge of duties in their various places of assignments.

“It is important to inform you that you have nothing to fear as the people of Oyo state are loving, peaceful and very hospitable. So l want you to be rest assured that you will find the environment right to live and work in.

“Shun truancy and other forms of anti-social behaviours such as cultism, drug abuse, internet scam and the likes rather you should engage yourself in productive activities.

“May l equally remind you that as patriots in service, we must all join hands to build a stronger, more united, peaceful and democratic nation. Therefore, it is imperative that you do not isolate yourself from the overall objectives of the founding fathers of the NYSC Scheme. Let the motto of NYSC which is “Service and humility” be your guiding principle, “he said.
Earlier in his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator in Oyo state, Mr Abel Odoba, said that the orientation course content was packaged to touch on the attitude of the participants mentally, psychologically and physically.

The Coordinator added that the introduction of Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development(SAED) programme into orientation course has created opportunities for corps members to learn different skills and redirect their mind-set from white collar jobs.

“Having gone through this life moulding activities, I have no doubt in my mind that the corps members are now fully prepared to appreciate the important role they are expected to play in nation building.

“It is particularly informative to note that a major aspect of the orientation course has to do with value re-orientation among the youth and the need to face the reality of the national situation in respect to post service unemployment, “he said.

The Coordinator urged all corps employers in the state to be more responsive to their responsibilities towards corps members’ welfare.

He also warned corps members against unauthorized journeys as it could lead to unpleasant situations.

“Strive to give your best in the national interest. Be law abiding and accept challenges that would give you an edge in life.

“You should add value to the certificate you have acquired by embarking on self-development programmes to be pursued after your official hours or weekends, “he said.
