Foundation sensitises students on tree planting in Badagry
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Foundation on Wednesday sensitised Students of Badagry Senior Secondary School on tree planting in commemoration of the World Environment Day.
Speaking at the programme, Mrs Henrietta Obioma-Igwe, the Manager, Programme and Development of the foundation said tree planting and conservation efforts are key to maintain a healthy and sustainable environment.
The theme of the 2024 edition is ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience’ which is celebrated globally every June 5.
Obioma-Igwe said in a remark said that the tree planting minimizes and prevent the environmental challenges impacts on in the environment and it’s survival.
“Trees provide shade, cool the air through transpiration, and block winds, regulating local climates. Oxygen Production.
“Trees produce oxygen, which is essential for human and animal life.
“Tree absorbs carbon dioxide, from the atmosphere, helping to prevent climate change,” she said.
She said that the foundation had chosen Badagry because the town is a border community, adding that the town was a point of contact to anybody coming into the country.
According to her, the foundation had planted 70 trees at Badagry Senior Secondary School, as part of efforts to ensure the progress of the growth.
Similarly, Mr Kenneth Adeoni, the Principal of the school said he was delighted because the sensitization that NNPC Foundation brought to students of the school.
“Now we are happy because the sensitization is for the children who are the leaders of tomorrow.
“This awareness will help them to understand better that we need to protect our environment for tomorrow.
“The sensitization has gone a long way to let them understand that we need to protect our environment with the issues of climate,” he said.
The principal therefore urged Nigerians to protect their environment by planting trees.
“To protect our environment, we need to plant tress consistently and for the fact that we have planted trees, we also need to nurture them very well.
“This sensitization will help the students to understand environment through tree planting,” he said.
He also commended the foundation for their consistency in piloting the programme, adding that the programme is impacting in students live.
Adeoni also promised to ensure that the 70 trees planted in the school will be well nurtured to maturity.
Earlier, Miss Mautin Tunde, the Assistant Chief Education Officer, District 5 said the major challenges facing the world is climate change.
“The only solution to this is by planting trees.
“I will implore the teachers and students of the school to ensure they sustain the trees NNPC foundation planted her today.
“I will urge them to sustain and nurture them to grow because this is the only way to say lives,” she said.
Olanrewaju Olawoyin, a student of SSS3 said the sensitisation programme had thought him that planting trees is of utmost benefit to mankind.
