New Lagos Assembly’s Speaker, Meranda, has royal blood, must deliver — Ex-colleague
A former Lagos lawmaker, Hon. Dipo Olorunrinu, has congratulated Mrs Mojisola Meranda on her emergence as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Olorunrinu, who represented Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly between 2015 and 2019, described Meranda as intelligent, decisive and a good listener with a royal blood.
Speaking in an interview in Lagos, Olorunrinu, said that the new speaker, having come from a royal family, understood how to serve the people.
The former legislator said: “This is not surprising, she (Meranda) deserves the honour and has the capacity to take the House to a greater heights.
“We came into the Lagos Assembly together at the same time in 2015. As a colleague then, she is someone that is very intelligent, affirmative and a good listener.
“She is reserved and doesn’t dabble into unnecessary issues.
“The new speaker is a very decisive person, very flexible, she listens a lot and gives her opinion awesomely in legislative duties.
“She will deliver and put the assembly in proper light, where it ought to be. The people should be rest assured of service.”
Olorunrinu, an APC chieftain, expressed confidence that the new speaker would add a lot of value to legislative duties and service to the people of the state.
He urged the Lagos Assembly to continue to fulfil the yearnings and aspirations of the people of the state.
The former lawmaker urged the new Speaker to carry all the other 39 lawmakers along in all dealings and activities to sustain the glory of the House.
NAN reports that Mrs Meranda was born into the prominent royal families of Ojora and Oniru on 16 August 1980.
Her late father, Taoreed Lawal-Akapo was a lawmaker and later the Ojora of Lagos, while her mother hails from the Oniru family.
Her brother, a former Commissioner of Agriculture in Lagos State, Abdulwasiu Lawal, is the Oniru of Iru kingdom.
Recalled that the erstwhile Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa (APC-Agege1 ), a sixth-term lawmaker, serving his third term as speaker, was on Monday removed by lawmakers.
Thirty-two (32) out of the 40 lawmakers, at an emergency plenary, impeached Obasa via voice votes over alleged gross misconduct.
The Assembly subsequently elected and swore in Deputy Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa I) to replace Obasa while Mr Fatai Adebola (APC- Ibeji-Lekki I) was elected as the Deputy Speaker.
The House also suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Mr Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely during the plenary and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
