African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria, Oyo State branch has sympathized with the parents and families of the victims of the stampede incident of December 18, 2024 which led to the untimely death of more than 30 children in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
AWLA in a statement in Ibadan noted that the incident could have been avoided if proper and necessary preventive measures had been put in place by the organizers, considering the vulnerability of children.
“This is indeed a grieving period for the whole state and at the same time, AWLA Nigeria, Oyo State is of the opinion that as much as the organizers did not intend for this unfortunate incident to happen, it could have been avoided if proper and necessary preventive measures had been put in place by the organizers, considering the vulnerability of children.
“AWLA Nigeria, Oyo therefore condemns the recklessness on the part of the organizers of the funfair who failed to consider the safety of these vulnerable young ones and could not foresee the danger involved in not been able to control crowd, “the statement said.
The association advised parents not to release their children to attend events on their own without their presence. It added that proper monitoring of children should be of utmost importance to everyone.
“Once again, AWLA Nigeria, Oyo state condoles with all the bereaved who are grieving the loss of their children and prays that the good Lord will comfort every grieving heart.
