NYSC: Lagos lawmaker recommends focus on agriculture, security

Hon. Adebola Shabi, member, representing Lagos Mainland 2, Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has advocated a change in the concept of Nationa.l Youth Service Corps scheme.

Shabi spoke on Friday at Sabo, Yaba, Lagos State, at the ninth constituency stakeholders’ meeting of the assembly.

The meeting held simultaneously in all Lagos State constituencies.

It had the theme: ‘Ensuring Food Security for a Sustainable Future: Youth Participation and Home-grown Farming’.

The lawmaker said that the change would go a long way to build a better Nigeria.

”We need to change the concept. Every year from now, when graduates are going for NYSC, half should go into agriculture and half should go into military training.

“We all have to work together to ensure we have a future Nigeria.

“For those in agriculture, the state should come out with a measure to ensure that they give them acres of land and buy their produce to control food prices.

“Fifty per cent of those in military training might decide to go into army, navy, air force or police, among others,” he said.

According to the lawmaker, this will improve Nigeria’s security.

“In Lagos, we are agitating for state police, and it has gone through the second reading in the assembly.

“We must get it right now so that the next generation will be right.

If we don’t, the next generation will get it wrong,” he said.

IThe lawmaker reiterated his commitment in bringing succour to his constituents.

He urged them to be patient with President Bola Tinubu’s administration which, he said, was working hard to improve the economy.

NAN reports that the meeting provided an opportunity for members of the constituency to express their views and assess the lawmaker’s performance.

A member of the constituency, Mr Wusu Jamiu, praised Shabi for efforts to improve the well-being of the constituents.

“He did a borehole at Ago-Egu and provided a generator to power it,” he said.

Also, Mr Omoniyi oshodi said that there were completed and ongoing road projects facilitated by the lawmaker, adding that he had facilitated employments for some youths.

“Honourable Shabi is doing well in this constituency. However, we expect him to not only sustain the good work but surpass the record,” he said.

Some students and adults also thanked the lawmaker for giving them scholarships and facilitating jobs for them.

The meeting was attended by community leaders, students, farmers, artisans and traders, among others.
