Walk the talk, let Nigeria sing new song soon, lawyer tells Tinubu
A Lagos-based constitutional lawyer and public affairs analyst, Mr Jide Ologun, has called on newly-inaugurated President Bola Tinubu to keep promises and gladden Nigerians’ heart in no distant time.
Ologun, who gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday said the new President should not allow his promises to be mere talk of mouth.
Congratulating Tinubu, who took oath of office yesterday as the 16th President of Nigeria, the lawyer said that the new President, however, without any doubt, had paid his dues and got wealth of experience and exposure about populist governance.
“He has to step right into engaging the problems that we have in the country namely economic challenges, urgent need to reignite the sense of unity in the country, fighting corruption and massive insecurity in the land.
” All these he has promised to attend to and there is also an urgent need to reactivate our economy, create enabling environment for foreign direct investment and begin to change the narrative of Nigeria as a poor nation in the midst of overflowing resources.
“Given his antecedents and international networking in the business community, we wish him the best and hope he will walk his talks and these promises to give us a new lease of governance life in Nigeria will not just be mere promises.
“Though we are not suggesting that there will be any magic in the immediate term, basically before too long, I expect that Nigerians will begin to sing new song of relief in the nation,” Ologun said.
He however said that Tinubu had been an accounting expert and had been well-groomed in the business of governance, “we expect that he will bring all these to bear.”
Ologun recounted that Tinubu ventured into active office around 1991 and as at 1993, he contested for senate under Social Democratic Party (SDP) and won.
He said that the President also contested for Lagos governorship seat and won for two terms, terms.
According to him, his two-terma were with remarkable development and progress in the state that even his critics during that most recent general elections could discredit.
The public affairs analyst stressed the need for the new administration to prioritise unity and the need to reorientate Nigerians across ethnic divides to determine to live in harmony for the sake of the country.
“The very great starting point for Tinubu will be to start the news orientation for unity in the country and attending to the yearnings of the diverse groups that we have within the confine of his capacity as the President and Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“It was good that the President Paul Kagame of Rwanda was present at the inauguration, having tasted the bitter pills of what ethnic divisions can bring to a nation, and he has succeeded in banishing that mentality from the citizens.
“Now, we have Rwandans who are loyal to their national sovereignty and think first of their nation.
“That is why Rwanda is one of the fast growing economies in Africa. Wherever we have been to on the negative side should not stop us from proceeding on the positive side,” he said.
Ologun, who wished Tinubu successful and impactful administration, said that with the help of the ministers and heads of various departments and agencies, better days were ahead for Nigerians.
Tinubu and Sen. Kashim Shettima were sworn-in as president and vice president at the Eagle Square, Abuja, on Monday, after expiration of the two-term tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
